One of the best pieces of professional advice I ever received was from a supervisor early on in my career who reminded me to “never put your personal feelings ahead of what is best for your organization. If you always do the right thing for the company, everything will work out.”

I realize this is easier said than done, and some folks choose to take the opposite approach. Some leaders feel the need to build kingdoms or guide their decisions by what is best for them personally. This approach never works out well and in fact, almost always, has a seriously negative impact on the institution.  You want to lead with the organization in at the top of mind—always. period.
